Job summary

We are looking for a motivated Flight Software Engineer to join our team working on our cutting-edge Flight Software Development Kit (FSDK).

The FSDK is a toolkit for building model-based flight software from reusable, cross-platform parts. As a member of the FSDK team you would be:

  • working on software components, from hardware drivers to spacecraft management. These are written in C with a strong embedded mindset. You would need to be comfortable working in restricted C environments.
  • developing the framework we use to build our software products. We are seeking engineers who can create the abstractions our customers use to write their flight software. Broad experience of design and abstract thinking in any discipline would be beneficial.
  • interacting with our ground software and tooling teams to ensure our products work together for all of our users. Good communication skills and a desire to find a solution which works for everyone would be vital when working across team boundaries.

We see this role as being full time, although this is negotiable. Ideally, we would like this role to be based in either Dundee or Edinburgh, to allow for close working with the FSDK product team.

Essential technical skills

We see the following as essential to the job:

  • Excellent C skills, preferably with experience spanning multiple hardware platforms and operating systems.
  • Strong technical analysis capabilities. Experience gathering requirements, defining problems, and proposing and implementing solutions.

  • The ability to work effectively in a Linux environment using a range of tools.

Personal skills

We’re especially looking for someone who:

  • Works well both independently and in a team as part of a fast-paced technical environment.
  • Is diligent, creative, and attentive to details.
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills, both for internal and external, and customer facing, interactions.
  • Wants to make a strong contribution to the business, financially but also in terms of team culture and values. You enjoy making an impact and shaping how businesses operate.
  • Is consistently curious, interested in learning new skills and open to new ideas.

Desirable technical skills

We think that the following skills would be valuable in this role:

  • Familiarity with additional programming languages, particularly Python, and their individual styles and idioms.
  • Exposure to hardware interfacing in an embedded, real-time or bare metal environment.
  • Knowledge of, or exposure to, space systems in either a commercial or academic context.
  • Experience of model-based and/or component-based software engineering.
  • Experience with a range of development environments, frameworks or libraries.
  • Familiarity with Mercurial, git or other similar VCS.

What we can offer you

  • A competitive salary in the range of £35k-£47k depending on experience, with regular reviews.
  • A fantastic opportunity to join a growing, innovative, employee-centred business pushing boundaries in the space industry.
  • Flexible hours and hybrid working, enabling you to create your ideal work life balance.
  • 36 days paid holiday per annum.
  • 6% employer pension contribution.
  • Company Sick Pay and Long-Term Sickness cover.

  • Investment in you and your skill development and the opportunity to attend relevant events and conferences to aid career / skill development.
  • Company events and regular activities for social engagement and team building.
  • An open, supportive, inclusive environment where you can explore your ideas and make a big difference to the product and business.
