Job summary

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Cloud Developer to join our Ground Segment team, this exciting new role will contribute to ongoing ground software product development and will act as the leading authority on Cloud Deployment solutions for our products. Our Ground team is focused on the development of new and existing Bright Ascension ground software products. As part of the Ground team, you will be maintaining existing products, contributing to development of new products and getting involved in all stages of that process, including design and testing, as well as providing support on the ground products both internally and externally. The Ground team runs using Agile practices and works closely with other development teams in the company to create a cohesive suite of software products.

As a member of the Ground team you would be:

  • Developing and designing elements of our ground software.
  • Providing support on cloud platforms (preferably Azure or AWS) including architecture, development, best practices and guidance to less experienced members of the team.
  • Ensuring the reliability of our cloud-based systems and applications.
  • Designing, maintaining and integrating archiving solutions.

We see this role as being full time, although this is negotiable. Ideally we would like this role to be based in either Dundee or Edinburgh, to allow for close working with the other members of the Ground team. This is a hybrid role with one day per week required in the office for team meetings and collaboration.

Essential technical skills

We see experience with the following as essential to the job:

  • A solid background of experience and knowledge of AWS or Azure.
  • Experience with deploying, configuring, and managing cloud architecture and technologies.
  • Experience with containerization and container orchestration technologies, particularly Kubernetes.
  • An understanding of how to deploy and configure AWS/Azure components to adhere to tight security requirements.
  • Understanding of database schemas and query languages.
  • Some experience with configuration management tools, e.g. Ansible.

Desirable technical skills

We think that the following skills would definitely be valuable in this role:

  • The main implementation language for our ground software backend is Java and, as such, existing Java development skills would be a useful; however, we find that good software engineering skills are transferable and so a willingness to learn or develop Java skills based on experience in other languages is sufficient.
  • Knowledge of, or exposure to, space systems in either a commercial or academic context.
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding of the latest cloud technologies and trends.
  • Up to date knowledge and understanding if the latest archiving technologies and trends.
  • Familiar with at least one programming language (Java or Python preferred).
  • Experience of development and debugging of high-quality code and adherence to best coding practices.
  • Experience in planning and executing all stages of software engineering, from design to documentation, according to a specified development process.
  • Experience with both relational and non-relational databases.
  • Awareness of security identity, access management and authentication using products such as ADFS, SSL/TLS Certs, OIDC, OAUTH2, Keycloak or Redhat SSO.
  • Familiarity with DevOps concepts, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience operating as part of a collaborative Agile team.
  • Familiarity with log collection technologies and monitoring platforms.
